About This Item

Sarah Orne Jewett was a US author, mostly of short stories and poems, mostly recognized for her native beautiful crafts situated on or close to the southern shoreline of Maine. Sarah is remarkable as a pivotal professional of American literary regionalism.

Sarah and her father often visits the fishermen and farm workers of her hometown Maine, and she had an intense and ardent passion of their style of living and of the sceneries and melodies of her vicinities. These lifestyle, and book reading in her family?s huge library, shaped the bigness of her instruction. Though she also studied at the Berwick Academy, she regarded her education unimportant in comparison with the instruction she acquired all by herself. In her younger days, she started to scribe of the diminishing farm lands and abandoned, docks without ships surrounding her. She printed her first tale, Jenny Garrow?s Lovers, in the Flag of Our Union and pursued it with The Shipwrecked Buttons in the Riverside Magazine for Young People and Mr. Bruce in The Atlantic Monthly. Her first books had this signature, Alice Eliot or A.C. Eliot. Plentiful following depictions of a town in New England, Deephaven, that appeared like South Berwick, were issued in The Atlantic Monthly and were compiled in Deephaven, her first piece.

Sarah?s other writings include: Deephaven; Play Days; Old Friends and New; Country By-Ways; The Mate of the Daylight, and Friends Ashore; A Marsh Island; A White Heron and Other Stories; The Story of the Normans, Told Chiefly in Relation to Their Conquest of England; The King of Folly Island and Other People; Tales of New England; Betty Leicester: A Story for Girls; and many more.
