About This Item

Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 1990. 375 pp, small 4to (10" H). B&w plates, maps. "(G)oes back to the roots of our present defence policies in 1760, when Britain first gained a tenuous hold in Canada. From this point on, our policies have been moulded by tactical alliances - between the English-speaking and French-speaking peoples of Canada, and between the great powers which dominated world politics no less in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries than they do today. (Strips) back the mythologies that now surround the key events in our half-remembered past, showing how fragile was Britain's initial rule of Canada, what really was a stake in the War of 1812, why we became embroiled in the Boer War, and just who exactly refused to rush to Britain's defence during the First World War. These events and many others, rarely mentioned in other history books, are related." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very tiny dint on top edge of rear board, tiny ink mark on bottom of text block and bottom of front board - NOT a remainder mark. Dust jacket has minor edge wear and very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, one small edge tear with crease.. Hard Cover. Very Good+/Very Good.
