Signed by Laws.John Keeble in his A Tribute to B G Laws we learn Laws was born on February 6, 1861 in Barnsbury, London and died on September 21, 1931 in London, also composed problems under the noms de plume, Handley Roads (while living on Hanley Road); S. Green (while living at Stroud Green); N.R.S (the final initials of his three names. Benjamin Glover Laws); C. Hill (Crouch Hill); I. S. Lington (Islington); C. Horn (Hornsey). Keeble wrote that, "Mr. Laws started his problematic career in a column edited by F. C. Collins in Brief. . . Gilt-stamped decoration on front board and mirror blind-stamped decoration on back board. Boards have bevelled edges. All page edges gilt. Dark brown endpapers. Pages [3]-31 are printed on recto only. This booklet was probably given to the guests at the celebration of the 10th wedding anniversary of Mary Harris and Wistar Morris. The 10th anniversary is traditionally the tin anniversary, which would be observed by a present of a tin bank containing railroad, government, or other bonds. Instead, in this case, it contained the poem written, presumably by Wistar Morris, to celebrate their anniversary, as well as a shorter poem he had written 10 years earlier to welcome her to Green Hill Farm. 1847, first printing, 54 page pamphlet in fair to good condition. Wraps are nearly off, front is stained, title page heavily foxed with pencil notations of prior book seller. Interior is otherwise pretty good, minor to moderate foxing, no other writing or vandalism. Complete as issued. Scarce first printing of this satire on tobacco use. People have suggested for a long time that tobacco has ill effects on the health of users and those around them - here is a 19th century example of that opinion. Identification of the author is difficult - I have listed two common suggestions. I am pretty sure we can rule out Solomon Spittle. Item is rare: WordCat locates two copies of this printing (#237747794); none from this date are for sale. Please see scans of the item you will receive. Included in 'Medical' history as this pamphlet does more than hint at the health problems of tobacco users.

Circa 1875 edition of popular captivity narrative. Nelson & Phillips, New York. Spencer was 11 when captured in 1792. Brown blindstamped cloth, gilt title on spine. Condition is Very Good: Recased using original boards sometime in last 40 years. Modern endpapers. No interior writing, occasional foxing, some smudges, old corner folds. Small hole pp.13/14 affecting a few letters. Binding is sound. 160 pages with 4 plates and 4 engravings embedded in text all included in pagination. Contents bound at end as usual with this book. The plates and engravings are same topics and locations as the 1842 edition but are by a different engraver. True first edition is 1835 in either New York or Pennsylvania. 1852 softcover pamphlet discussing the downside of tobacco. When I got this the cover was off. Volume has had some restoration: cover is backed with matching paper and is reattached. Paper and binding are fragile but overall readable with a gentle touch. Primary defect is the corner off the front page. Interior has foxing and stains but no vandalism. I think the author comes out of the same group that published Solomon Spittle (which I also have listed). 1852 is the first year this was published but this is titled "Fourth Thousand" so this is an early printing. Has 8 plates that are included in pagination. 179 pages, complete as issued. An uncommon item generally found in poor condition. This is decent not great (which sometimes is the best you can do). Topic is health problems of tobacco. Discusses addiction, acute toxicity, chronic health problems including heart and lung disease as well as problems of second hand smoke. Feel free to inquire. Backing boards totaling 1/4" were added to facilitate framing. Full-name Jimmy Carter autographs are quite scarce, especially so with professional certification.
