About This Item

New York: G.W. Carleton & Co, 1871. First Edition . Hardcover. Good. 300 pp. Green cloth with title in gilt shield on spine, purple endpapers. First edition of the author's fifth book, a novel set in ancient Persia. Walworth wrote rather lurid historical novels, his best known being Warwick. His personal life would have made a classic second rate novel of the period. The son of a popular judge in Saratoga Springs, he married his ste sister. Early in the marriage it turned out Walworth was a wife beater. After years of separations and increasingly odd behavior Mansfield moved to New York City. The letters he sent to his wife included death threats, and in 1873, Francis Hardin Walworth, his 19 year old son, resolved the situation by going into the city and fatally shooting his father. Wright II 2621. Original owner's name on ffep ornamented by beautifully drawn flourishes. Spine slant, edge wear, some foxing throughout. Good
