About This Item

Cambridge: Sever and Francis, 1862. Later edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. 2 vol. 8vo. [3], iv-xxiii, [1], 1-559, [5]; [3], iv-xiv, 1-499, [5] pp. Purple publisher's cloth with three borders in blind on each board, spines with gilt rules and lettering. Yellow endpapers and pastedowns. Translated by Henry Reeve. Edited with notes and revisions to the translation by Francis Bowen. Middle Tennessee State University, The First Amendment Encyclopedia, William W. Riggs, "Alexis de Tocqueville". From 1831 to 1832 De Tocqueville traveled the United States and recorded his eyewitness account of the governance and the social customs of the land. His work focuses on the freedoms of speech, press, and religion, and how they shaped the American experience. The author was writing with an eye towards improving governance in European countries, especially in his native France. The publication proved to be hugely influential and a valuable historical snapshot of the fledgling United States, as it was just a few decades after the conclusion of the Revolutionary War. A faint spot of foxing to the textblocks, overall a lovely set.

Synopsis

De la démocratie en Amérique (published in two volumes, the first in 1835 and the second in 1840) is a classic French text by Alexis de Tocqueville on the United States in the 1830s and its strengths and weaknesses. A literal translation of its title is On Democracy in America, but the usual translation of the title is simply Democracy in America. It is regarded as a classical account of the democratic system of the United States and has been used as an important reference ever since.
