n. p. (no city stated): Westvaco, 1999. Limited Edition. Near fine in dark blue cloth covered boards with gilt text on the spine and a stamped gilt Fleur-de-les on the front and rear boards and with a red silk placement ribbon sewn-in at the head of the spine. The rear board has two rents to the cloth of about 1/3" each. Without a dust jacket as issued; however in a fine paper covered slip case with bumps to the enclosed corners. Laid-in is a special presentation card from several Westvaco employees to the prior owner. 297 pages of text. The Westvaco Christmas release of 1999 which is the 42nd volume in Westvaco's annual American Classic series.
Synopsis
De la démocratie en Amérique (published in two volumes, the first in 1835 and the second in 1840) is a classic French text by Alexis de Tocqueville on the United States in the 1830s and its strengths and weaknesses. A literal translation of its title is On Democracy in America, but the usual translation of the title is simply Democracy in America. It is regarded as a classical account of the democratic system of the United States and has been used as an important reference ever since.
