Ernest Becker (September 27, 1924 – March 6, 1974) was an American cultural anthropologist. This book was awarded the 1974 Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction (posthumously). From the dj flap: "Man is the only creature who must pass a lifetime with the fear of death haunting even his most sun-filled days. The Denial of Death is an original exploration of the concept that man's innate fear of death is a principal source of his activity.
