It is stated in the preface to this work that the author's intention was to attract foreign visitors to the island by presenting its "brillant avantages" and to show to those who lived there the gains to be made. Corfu is described in minute detail: included are accounts of geography, climate, population, wildlife, agriculture, industry and commerce, economy, manners and customs, architecture, costume, law, arts and entertainment, health and sanitation, education, and numerous other subjects.
Emmanuel Theotokis (1777-1837) was a Greek philologist, historical writer and politician. He was born in Corfu and was a descendant of the historical family of Theotokides.
Biography
He served as president of the last French Senate as well as the first of the united state of the Ionian Islands which ratified the Constitution in 1817 and was honored in 1818 with the Grand Cross of the Order of Saints Michael and George. He was also a corresponding member of several European Academies as well as the founder and lifelong president of the Bible Society (for the dissemination of the Holy Scriptures in the East), in Corfu.
The most important of his works is entitled Details sur Corfu, written in French, published in Corfu in 1826 and containing all kinds of information about the island.
