Osaka: The Osaka Mainichi,, 1924. First edition, first printing, signed by the author on the front free endpaper, of this history spanning the period from the 18th century to the early 1920s. The growth of a vibrant fourth estate was an important component of the Meiji Restoration, making and breaking multiple governments and wielding significant social influence. Octavo. Original light brown sand-grain cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, front board with blind panel, edges trimmed. With dust jacket. Tissue-guarded photographic half-tone frontispiece, 14 plates (1 folding). Remnants of old bookseller's label on front pastedown; contemporary ink annotation on p. 65; more recent pencil and blue crayon annotations on pp. 4-5. Spine sunned, occasional faint stains to cloth, contents evenly toned, one gathering proud: jacket unclipped, toning and soiling, losses at spine ends, old adhesive tape repairs on verso: a very good copy in like jacket.
