About This Item
Oxford: At the Clarendon Press,, 1962. First edition, first impression, of this authoritative history of logic from ancient Greece to the 20th century. William Kneale "held that philosophical problems cannot be properly appreciated without an understanding of their history, and the book is written in this spirit" (ODNB). Martha, who handled the chapters on ancient history, taught philosophy at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. Unusually, she retained her fellowship after her marriage, becoming only the second female philosopher to do so. Octavo. Original dark blue cloth, spine lettered and with publisher's device in gilt. With dust jacket. Errata leaf tipped in after p. viii. Bookseller's ticket of Parker's, Oxford, to front pastedown. Infrequent pencil annotations and sidelining to contents. Cloth and gilding bright, minimal bumping to spine ends; minor toning, sunning, and creasing to unclipped jacket: a fine copy in near-fine jacket.
