Arthur Henry Sarsfield Ward - mostly known as Sax Rohmer - created Dr. Fu Manchu, Master Criminal and all-round bad guy, the star of a world-wide conspiracy known as the Yellow Peril. Denis Nayland Smith and his associate, Dr. Petrie, were on a quest to rid the world of Fu Manchu. Rohmer's first published novel was The Mystery of Dr. Fu Manchu, published in 1913, and while he wrote a lot of other novels, Fu Manchu was popular through thirteen more novels as well as an assortment of other works written by other authors. The first Fu Manchu movie was done in 1923, a British silent serial called The Mystery of Dr. Fu Manchu. The first American film was in 1929, The Mysterious Dr. Fu Manchu.
