About This Item

Minimal library distinctions, "Property of the Federal Government, W.P.A. Arizona Statewide Project" stamped 1st Title Page, pocket intact (1 check out), otherwise, appears as near unblemished copy in tan cloth boards displaying minor surface/edge wear, with small tear at head of spine. This was probably an Indian Reservation copy. Publishers information pasted to FLEP, light age foxing.

Illustrated by Lilian J. Reichard & Gladys A. Reichard. The flow of daily life on the Navajo Reservation centered in the activities of the matriarch of the family group, vividly and poetically told by a sympathetic observer of the The People. Though the account is fictionalized to the extent that it does not describe any living person, there is probably more truth here than in many scientific reports.

The story is of Dezba, matron and head of a large Navajo household. Dezba's husband was a Silversmith, they had three children and many grandchildren. Along with Debza's brother, theirs was an extended family always welcome at their hogan. Debza and her family raised sheep. A wonderful story of their family, day to day life, and culture. Illustrated with 56 full page black and white photographs. Gladys Reichard (1893-1955), Bangor, Pa., was a noted cultural and linguistic anthropologist, best known for her work with the Navajo. Her main focus of study was Navajo lifestyles. She wrote many books about their language, culture and customs. For many summers in a row she lived and worked among the Navajo in the southwestern United States learning their language, art, religion, and weaving techniques. Rare
