Martha Beatrice was born on January 22 , 1858 at Standish , near Gloucester. In 1873 she began to record a diary and she continued to make entries until her death at age eighty-five. She was to become one of England's great intellectual and political figures and her diary entries reveal her life and her thought in intriguing detail. The manuscripts are comprised of fifty-seven hand-written exercise books and are housed in the British Library of Political and Economic Science. They are in three forms : the original hand-written exercise books ; a typescript , partially typed under Beatrice's supervision and a second typescript by the Library when it found that the first typescript was not complete.
