Contemporary calf boards, gold stamped leather spine, expertly mended; with five raised bands, hinges mended. First English edition. Translated by Mrs. Percy Sinnet, with an introduction by Alexander von Humboldt. Mollhausen accompanied Whipple's expedition to survey a route to the Pacific, and served as the party's naturalist and artist. The text is devoted largely to excellent descriptions of Indian life and aboriginal antiquities, with additional material on the expeditions of Col. Fremont. The handsome chromolithograph plates depict the landscape and natives of the areas traversed. One of the most important accounts of the American west. London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, & Roberts, 1858 Contemporary full calf, 8vo. xi,397pp. frontispiece and 4 chromolithographs, 8 monochrome plates, 3 text-illustrations. Mollhausen was a Prussian artist who visited the United States three times in the 1850s. In 1853 he joined Lieutenant Amiel Weeks Whipple's Pacific Railroad survey of the Thirty-fifth parallel; with many interesting accounts of the American South-west and it's inhabitants. Joints on spine a little weak, slight foxing to the chromolithos, a very nice copy of the first edition of the second volume in a contemporary brown calf with marbled end-papers and edges. Contains seven full color plates, three tinted and a tinted folding map.
