About This Item

Paris: Antoine de Sommaville, 1649. First Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Very Good Condition. Full contemporary calf, elaborately gilt spine. Corners bumped and rounded, hinges rubbed, wear at spine ends, inner joint cracked, occasional damp stains, mostly mild, scattered foxing. Small library label on the front board and an old bookplate inside the front cover. An attractively printed and curiously organized dictionary - an early attempt at encyclopedic completeness that led to Bayle's Dictionaire Historique et Critique (1697) and Diderot and D'Alembert's great Encyclopédie. Organized by word endings and published 14 years after Cardinal Richlieu called for the creation of a French Dictionary but 45 years before the first edition of the Dictionnaire de l'Académie Française. Title page in red and black, (6) 1198, (70)pp.
