Philadelphia: Claxton, Remsen, and Haffelfinger, n.d., 1870. 8vo, pp. [iii], viii, 979, [1]; text in double column; later half red morocco over marbled boards by Macdonald, gilt decorated spine in 6 compartments, gilt-lettered direct in 2, t.e.g.; fine, bright copy. Originally published in London in 1870, this American issue is from sheets printed in London. Brewer (1810-1897) was a man interested in lists and dictionaries. Besides this title he compiled A Reader's Handbook of Allusions, References, Plots and Stories (1880); Etymological and Pronouncing Dictionary of Difficult Words (1882); and A Dictionary of Miracles (1884).
