Gerardus Vossius was a 16th-century Dutch classical theologian known for being one of the first to treat theological dogmas and non-Christian religions from a historical point of view, rather than the more accepted theological. His works of rhetoric were widely popular and were used as textbooks during and after his life. He followed Aristotelian thought and was influenced, not only by Aristotle, but by Cicero and other ancient philosophers.
This 1695 edition of Vossius's rhetorical works includes his 'Artis Grammatica', grammar glossary, and commentary on speeches and orations.

Francis Bacon, one of the most famous English philosophers and scientists of the Renaissance. While most of his work deals with discovery, scientific method, and the scientific revolution, he did lean strongly toward Puritanism in his personal devotion.
A rare 1662 Elzevier printing of Bacon's "Historia Naturalis," or 'Natural History.' In this work, Francis Bacon sought to show the divisions of natural history, but more importantly to show how natural history overlaps with natural philosophy and they are not two distinct disciplines. This book helped lay the foundation for many philosophical methodologies that would be important through the 18th- and 19th-centuries.

An account of natural history based around observation and reading mixed with anecdotes and tales relating to the animal in question. The illustrator (anonymous) has then produced some extraordinary illustrations including an orang utan at the dining table, a flock of herons attacking rooks, a boxing kangaroo, and a man riding an ostrich, and a sneaking crocodile. Rev Smith refers to himself as an 'editor' rather than an author - but there are no clues as to contributors. Originally planned in 4 volumes, Vol 5 and 6 (covering fish, amphibians, insects and other invertebrates) were added in 1807.
