Beecher Snowe, born at Canaan Mountain near Norfolk, Connecticut in 1853, and who lived in West Norfolk, Connecticut at the time she wrote this brief booklet. Includes details of life in Litchfield County in the mid to late nineteenth century, including farming, the experience of having a home burnt to the ground (whereupon she was sent to her grandparents' in Goshen until the home was rebuilt), about travel to New Haven, marriage at age eighteen to live with her new husband's family, of hard work and little pleasure, of loss of a child, of illness, of a new war reminding one of the sorrows left by the Civil War. Covers rubbed with chipping to the spine ends, joints good, text block sound with no loosened pages, name of Monsieur Desbois mounted at bottom of title page, ol inscription on front free endpaper. Very worn copy of this two-volume work important mainly for having the engraved bookplate of American patriot Jeremiah Wadworth at the front of each volume. Wadsworth was a merchant and sea captain who represented Connecticut in the Continental Congess, and later, the US House of Representatives. The bookplate appears in Allen's American Bookplates as the first full page illustration. Full sheep, 310 + 307, [5] pages. Covers somewhat scorched and heavily chipped, spine coverings absent, frontis illustration lacking, text blocks shaky, dampstaining to top edges near the end of the first volume, worming to the bottom edges near the end of both volumes, pages age-toned. Bookplates, which are mounted on the pastedowns, are somewhat age-toned but unchipped.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Poor. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.
