About This Item

Amsterdam: [Jewish Central Information Office], 1934. Hardback. 1st edition. Original paper wrappers, 4to (large), 24 pages each issue. In German. Title translates as, "The Jewish Information Central. Reports of the Jewish Central Information Office. German Edition." Appears to have run a total of 8 issues, with the final issue appearing in early 1935.
The self-described objective of the "Jüdische Informations-Zentrale's" reports were to depict and inform on the political situation of Jews in the world, and especially in Germany. Dr. Alfred Wiener and his family "fled Germany in 1933 and settled in Amsterdam [Anne Frank and her family fled Germany to Amsterdam that same year as well]. Later that year he set up the Jewish Central Information Office (JCIO) at the request of the Board of Deputies of British Jews and the Anglo-Jewish Association. This archive collected information about the Nazis, which formed the basis of campaigns to undermine their activities.
Following the November Pogrom of 1938, Wiener prepared to bring his collection to the UK. It arrived the following summer and is believed to have opened on the day the Nazis invaded Poland.Throughout the War the JCIO served the British Government as it fought the Nazi regime. Increasingly the collection was referred to as ‘Dr Wiener's Library' and eventually this led to its renaming" as London's now famous Wiener Library (Wiener Library).
The Berichte was thus an extremely early important tool of Jewish resistance to Nazi persecution. Simultaneously issued in English and French. For more on the CLIO, see Jewish Central Information Office, the Wiener Library : its history and activities, 1934-1945.(London, 1946).
SUBJECT(S): Jews -- Germany -- Social conditions -- Periodicals. -- Politics and government -- Periodicals. Juifs -- Allemagne -- Conditions sociales -- Pe´riodiques. -- Politique et gouvernement.
