These two books were published some 25 years or more before Breytenbach's magisterial and authoritative History of the Anglo Boer War. They are, in a sense, a precursor. Volume I: 'Voorspel Tot die Stryd'. The boards have wear and scuffing. They are patient and benign. The contents are in pleasing condition. The pages are clean and clear and placid. Vol II: 'Ontplooiing van die Boere-Offensief Oktober 1899' (pub: 1949). The condition is very similar to that of Volume I. The boards are a little more worn, the contents a little more smart. fk. Author's presentation inscription to front free endpaper verso in first volume. 2 small, squarish 8vo volumes; original black cloth, lettered in gilt on spines; pp. (vi) + ix + (i) + 406, x + 381; endpaper map to first volume; photographs. Cloth very slightly rubbed; signed by earlier owner on front pastedown of second volume. Very good condition. Afrikaans text. These books were the precursors of Breytenbach's great magnum opus, the six-volume 'Geskiedenis van die Tweede Vryheidsoorlog in Suid-Afrika, 1899-1902'. Their themes are 'I. Voorspel tot die Stryd', and 'II. Ontplooing van die Boere-offensief Oktober 1899'. They are arguably the earliest works of serious historiography on the subject by an Afrikaans writer. .
