About This Item

Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1976. Hardcover. Small 4to. Black cloth with gilt spine lettering, dust jacket. x, 356pp. Near fine/very good. Faintest of jacket edgewear only. Superb, tight first edition of this analysis by the noted American diplomat (1909-94). He boldly inscribes and signs the dedication page (his favored spot) in black fineline: "Robert H. Malott / With very best wishes / George W Ball / June 26, 1976." In addition, neatly tipped to front flyleaf is a Typed Note Signed from Ball's business partner, investment banker Peter G. Peterson (1926-2018), U.S. Secretary of Commerce (1972-73) under Richard Nixon. 1p, 7¼" X 10½", New York, NY, 1 July 1976. Addressed to Robert H. Malott. Very good. Edgeworn. Writing on letterhead of Lehman Brothers, which cites him as Chairman of the Board, Peterson transmits this book "setting forth the perceptions of my partner, George Ball... Although the book is unquestionably controversial, it is an honest and lucid expression of George's point of view...." Signed simply "Pete" in blue ballpoint, with a handwritten postscript. Robert Malott (1926-2018) was a noted Chicago civic/business leader, CEO of FMC Corporation, Republican politico and philanthropist.
