Sir Charles Tupper, one of the "Fathers of Confederation", was a very important Canadian politician of t he 19th century. From 1873-78 he was right-hand man of Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. MacDonald, and was himself briefly (6 months) Prime Minister in 1896. From 1879-1884 he was minister of railways and canals, and as such supervised the arrangements for the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway.
