About This Item

1628 30 Years Valtellina War 1ed Valteline Lombards Grisons Italy SPAIN Phillip

The Valtellina is a valley in Northern Lombardy in Italy which became the site for numerous military struggles between the Lombards and the Grison League in the 16th- and 17th-centuries, most notably the Thirty Years War. It also was fought over by the Hapsburgs in Austria, as well as Spain, France, the Venetians, and still the Grisons. However, the most notable battle came when Spain, aided by the Catholic Church, massacred countless Protestants in 1620. For the next 20 years, the Valtellina would be held by different conquerors, seemingly alternating leadership every year or two until 1639 when the Treaty of Macon restored the power rightly to the Grisons.

In 1624, during the height of the struggle for power, an anonymous Italian letter was written describing the events and need for resolution. It was dedicated to Phillip III of Spain and the Catholic Church, pleading for peace and to return the land to the Grison's.

This 1628 first English edition was translated out of the original Italian by Thomas Roe. Interestingly, Roe, who also left his name off of the work, gives credit to Paolo Sarpi as the author. However, sources claim this as highly doubtful. (Scott, p.79-80)
