First settled by the Chamorro some 4,000 years ago, the island has a most complex history. Discovered by Ferdinand Magellan (in service to Spain) in 1521. Colonized by Spain; ceded 1898 to the US following following the Spanish-American War & immediately established as a military base; occupied by Japan in World War II; strategic base in both the Korean and Vietnam wars; temporary host to 100,000 Vietnamese refugees in 1975, and 6,600 Kurdish refugees in 1996; and, in 2017 North Korea announced capabilities to launch missiles into its waters. 142 pgs in 11 chapters.
