About This Item

Phila: Parker. Fair only. 1909. early. hardcover. large 8vo . 428pp . Front hinge repaired at title page. Corners through, book quite worn, lettering dull. Credits Cook's story --later eds. don't ! This edition, perhaps the first printing of this 'instant' book, credits Frederick Cook's account of the discovery. Editions printed somewhat later have a cancel title page tipped in that notes the folks in Copenhagen dismissed Cook's claim for lack of proof, and also have a 4 page signature at the end (pp. 429-32) which 'resolves' the matter in Peary's favor. Apart from the folks at the NGS, current feeling is that neither reached the pole, though Peary was likely much closer. .
