This classic research by Burrows was critical in dispelling the earlier hypothesis by Monro-Kellie that the blood volume in the brain remains constant. Burrows "demonstrated that the amount of blood in the brain can vary and this may be responsible for clinical signs." This publication "was a milestone in the study of cerebral vascular physiology."
