Owner's name on front end page, painter of frontispiece written underneath. <br> Benjamin Disraeli was a British statesman and novelist who was twice prime minister (1868, 1874â80) and who provided the Conservative Party with a twofold policy of Tory democracy and imperialism. Domestically, he concentrated on social reform. He codified the law on public health and passed laws to prevent labour exploitation and recognise trades unions. Abroad, his acquisition of shares in the Suez Canal was a major success.
