About This Item

Donington: Shaun Tyas, 2023. Book. Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. A fine new copy. This handsome well-illustrated book is printed in colour throughout and properly sewn and bound. Contains fifteen essays from a conference held by the Cornish Buildings Group in 2019, held to mark their 50th anniversary as a conservationist charity, and to attempt to answer the question 'What is unique about Cornish architecture?'. Subjects include domestic, educational, industrial and ecclesiastical buildings, the work of several high-profile architects in Cornwall (Sedding, Tilden), and the unique range of building stones available for Cornish building. There is an essay on Palladianism in Cornwall by the editor, and a major review of the archaeological discoveries at Tintagel by Jacky Nowakowski, and one on the design competition for Cornwall's new cathedral at Truro in 1876, by Patrick Newberry. The whole is preceded by a general survey by the editor and final postscript by Julian Holder, and a comprehensive index. 320pp..
