About This Item

Paris & Bruselle, 1866. xvi,456pp. Frontis. Half title. Contemporary half morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Extremities rubbed, some light scattered foxing. Else very good. An account of the Indians of the American Northwest and Canada (including the Eskimo and Sioux) and the Catholic missions there, by a missionary. The text contains some notes on vocabulary, and the final chapter is devoted to Indian legends. The book documents a peace conference with the Sioux, Faraud's frustrations in converting the "Sauteaux" (a branch of Ojibwa), and contains a brief analysis of the Cree and Montagnais languages. Two entries in the NUC, for the present edition and a later one, include the note, "First edition 1865," but there is no entry for an 1865 edition. Not in Field. LANDE 1167. TPL 4496. SABIN 24126.
