Stanford University: James Ladd Delkin (printed by Taylor & Taylor), 1945. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. One of 350 copies, duodecimo size, 102 pp. Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) was a prolific writer, poet, essayist, moralist, and lexicographer, who wrote on numerous subjects, including "A Dictionary of the English Language", which preceded the "Oxford English Dictionary" by over 170 years. This volume contains prayers written by Johnson on a variety of subjects, and contains an introduction by Quaker author and theologian Elton Trueblood (1900-1994), who served as an advisors to both President Dwight D. Eisenhower and President Richard Nixon.
This volume was in the original blue tissue wrapping, still taped closed, as it came from the publisher; we opened it in order to catalogue the book.
___DESCRIPTION: Quarter white cloth with gold-coloured cloth along the spine, with red paper boards, white lettering on the spine, top edge stained orange, fore- and bottom edges uncut, title page in red and black with a facsmile of an eighteenth-century engraving of Johnson; Centaur type, Worthy Hand and Arrows paper, duodecimo size (7.25" by 5"), pagination: [i-vi] vii-xxxii [1-2] 3-68 [69] [1 colophon], one of 350 copies, unnumbered. In the original blue tissue wrapping from the publisher.
___CONDITION: A fine copy; the covers clean, the corners straight and unrubbed, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and free of prior owner markings; the barest hint of rubbing to the tail of the spine, and a couple small, light specks of soiling to the front board, else fine. The blue tissue wrapping is good, clean, with overall edge wear, some chipping to the middle creases, and toning to the outer panels.
