Illustrator: Photographic. acknowledgements, list and plates, preface by author, selected book list and indices. Between pages 164 and 165. There are 32 pages of black-and-white photographs, of various British documentary pioneers, but, the vast majority are black-and-white stills from various documentary films. Rust coloured cloth covered boards with gilt facsimile author's signature to the top edge of the front panel and gilt coloured titles to the backstrip. Back in white illustrated dustwrapper with green, yellow, black and white coloured titles to the front panel and backstrip. Black-and-white photograph of author to the rear dustwrapper panel. "The 1930s were the years of the British documentary movement, and are often regarded as the golden age of the British Cinema: the period when film related most closely to society and when it seemed most to matter in the nation's intellectual life. It was a period dominated by three names: Grierson, Rotha and Wright. In Documentary Diary Paul Rotha gives a first-hand account of those years." -- from the front fold over panel blurb. Softening of the lower backstrip edge with bumping to the lower right-hand corner of the front book panel. Browning and foxing to the textblock edges with age toning of the pages. Creasing to the dustwrapper edges with sunning to the dustwrapper panels. The front panel has been splattered with a substance which has left fine black spots. This is the first UK edition.
