Thick 8vo, cloth, spine gilt lettering, illustrated, 786 [1], 1211 [1], 1215, 1144 pp. Some hinges a little weak, spines are chipped and torn, with a few pieces missing, or loose, some edgewear, pages 3 & 4 of volume two torn with some loss of text, spine gilt lettering a little faded, some edgewear and foxing, small tear to large folding map (map still in really good shape), missing 1779 map of New York in volume one, minor aging and foxing. Edmund Bailey O'Callaghan (1797-1880) was born in Ireland, but immigrated to Canada in 1823. He was a doctor and journalist by training, but was also politically active, and left Canada after participating in some activities in Montréal, which ended in a riot. He would practice medicine after moving to Albany, but would also become the secretary-archivist for the state of New York. This work is a richly illustrated history of New York during the colonial period. Illustrations include some folding maps, engravings and charts. Howes indicates that there are 78 maps and plates in these volumes.
