About This Item
New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1894. 1894 at title page; no other dates, indications. Handy pocket 4" x 6 1/4" design featuring one of the first (possibly, the first) American appearance of an Arthur Rackham illustration without other illustrators. Rackham frontispiece with clean tissue guard intact: "I'm not going to tell you anything more," said Phyllis. Beige full-cloth boards, red cover and spine titles, moderate rub, discoloration, spine fleck. Cover features large Henry Holt owl insignia, also in red. Pages very good, clean. Front endpaper features six titles of romances from Anthony Hope. Bind good; hinges intact. Scarce solid original with Arthur Rackham imagery. From Anthony Hope, author of "The Prisoner of Zenda." In the character of Dolly Foster, British writer Anthony Hope has created an unforgettable embodiment of the turbulent end of the Victorian era. Constrained by old-fashioned conventions but bursting with new-fangled ideas, this young woman is the element that ties together all of the vignettes and short tales collected in The Dolly Dialogues. Humorous dialogues of the flippant bachelor Carter with his flirtatious friend Dolly and other acquaintances. From title page: "These are foolish things to all the wise - And I love wisdom more than she loves me." 198 pages with six pages of adverts for available titles from Henry Holt. Insured post.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good. Illus. by Rackham, Arthur (Frontispiece). 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.
