About This Item
Jersey City, New Jersey: Perleberg & Fenney, 1900. Domestic Animals in Action Part I, The Horse. Perleberg & Fenney, Jersey City, New Jersey Circa 1900. 14 x 11 inches. 44 silver gel photographic montage plates. Maroon binder with cloth covered boards and paste down photograph on front, label on spine. Fore edge with imbedded string ties. Title page consists of card stock with paste down label. Moderate wear and soiling to boards with bookplate of Edward T. Grigware inside front board.
Publication of this title is somewhat of an enigma. No publishing information with book. One copy found in OCLC at Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library notes the publisher as Perleberg & Fenney of Jersey City, New Jersey. Title page also notes this as Part 1--if more Parts were published, we could not find them.
Previous owner was Edward T. Grigware of Cody, Wyoming. Before moving to Wyoming, Grigware had an exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago (1927). He moved to Cody in 1936 where he painted the mural inside the Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He also painted murals in LDS Chapels in Los Angeles and Honolulu, as well as banks in Spokane and Seattle.
Despite the mystery, the book is quite wonderful containing 44 loosely laid photographic montages of the domestic horse at work: military, racing, fire departments, delivery carriages, farming and ranching, parades and circus work. We believe the work to be a collection of various photographers' work edited for this project, however, we do find 5-10 images with Cleveland Ohio businesses in view. Each silver gel montage contains 4-10 photographs. A wonderfully weird item of Americana.
