About This Item

New York, NY: Viking, 2000. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Clean, tight, unmarked; absolute minimal wear; This book contains the many letters the two of them wrote to each other whenever Jack was in transit, reveals a surprising side of Kerouac - his capacity for forming a tender bond with a woman who shared his passion for writing. It also gives us a vivid and immediate picture from the female perspective of what it took to be young and Beat in the Cold War fifties, to participate in the formation of a defiant new bohemia in downtown Manhattan, and to fall deeply in love with a man who "could behave unforgivably but whom you would ultimately have to foregive.

Synopsis

Door Wide Open: A Beat Love Affair In Letters, 1957-1958 is a collection of letters that were written in 1957-1958 between Joyce Johnson and Jack Kerouac. The letters depict the rather detached and absurd romance of the two writers, and they are supplemented greatly by Johnson's own narration and related letters between Joyce and her friends and relatives. Johnson is referred to in Kerouac's novel Desolation Angels as Alyce Newman, and she has written several introductions for his works.
