New York: Harper & Brothers, 1902. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. 8vo. [6], 3-179, [5] pp. Bound in red cloth with gilt decorations and lettering on the front board and spine; top edge gilt. Decorative green and beige endpapers and pastedowns. Title page printed in red and black. With a frontispiece and six plates illustrated by Lucius Hitchcock. Each leaf's text outlined in a red border. Without the dustwrapper. Ahearn APG 066a. MacDonnell, "The Primary First Editions of Mark Twain", Firsts July / August 1998, 54. McBride 210. A sharp copy of Twain's parody of Sherlock Holmes, in which an innocent man finds himself in the crosshairs of a wannabe detective. Just a touch of wear to the extremtiies, overall a sharp and clean copy.
