About This Item
New York: H. R. Russell and Son, 1894. First edition. INSCRIBED TO THE ARTIST DANIEL BEARD on the dedication page, "To Dan Beard whose advice and friendship is of the greatest value to his friend C. D. Gibson, Dec. 1894." Beard was an illustrator, author, youth leader and social reformer of whom Gibson wrote, in a tribute appearing in Boy's Life ("My Friend Dan Beard," Feb. 1925), "He was the first professional artist I ever came in contact with, personally. That was nearly fifty years ago.... I am proud to have known him intimately all these years." Large (18 x 12") oblong off-white beveled paper-covered boards with plain quarter linen spine; "Gibson Girl"-style drawing on front cover in black; illustrated throughout with satirical full-page drawings of love and life from ballroom to drawing room with the images of women inspired by his wife and her four sisters; unpaginated. Good with areas of paper covering worn from board edges, spine cloth repaired, and linen tape to inner hinges. Small chip to lower corner front endpaper otherwise interior pages are near fine. Nice association.
