Londini: Longmans, Green & Co., 1881. SCARCE in lovely fine binding stamp signed by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, London for Marshall Field and Co. Thomas Carlyle, 1795-1881, was a Scottish essayist, satirist, and historian. Published a month after Carlyle's death by his literary executor, James Anthony Froude, to much controversy over the editing. They were republished in 1887 with Harvard professor Charles Eliot Norton as the editor. Two volumes in contemporary half calf over marbled boards, the calf undyed at the spines and dyed green at the covers to harmonize with the green marbled boards, backs gilt, marbled end papers, top edges gilt, wear showing at joints yet still holding nicely, small rubs at corners, interiors clean and bright. Early leather binding of half dark blue morocco. Spine, which has been re-laid, ruled lettered and decorated in gilt. Double gilt ruled lines on the morocco edges bordering blue cloth panels on the boards. Marbled endpapers with a strip of plain paper to both inner hinges where the book has been professionally re-cased. Top edge gilt. Some rubbing to the edges of the binding. A beautifully produced edition in the arts and crafts style of the period, in a skilfully repaired but very good quality and still attractive early leather binding.

All uniformly bound in attractive fine early leather bindings of full red straight grained morocco. Spines with four raised bands, each with gilt ruling. Compartments ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Gilt decorative borders on boards, with four blind stamped ruled lines inside the panel. Turn-ins with floral gilt roll. Board edges with gilt tooling to corners. All edges gilt. Neat previous owner bookplates on front paste downs. One gathering slightly sprung in volume one. Some light spotting to a few pages in each volume, but generally a clean set. Spine of volume three is a bit faded and worn and a bit of rubbing to the extremities of the other volumes but overall a very good and beautifully bound set.
