From the foreword, "Those who know Dud's beloved country, will recognize that certain incidents and figures of speech, which appear in these stories, have been gleaned from the fish-yarn lore of the Upper Kennebec. Every stream and lake that is mentioned is an actual bit of Somerset County, and the publishers have suggested that a page be included, at the back of the book, to which the reader may turn for exact locations."
