About This Item
Perth, Crawley: University of Western Australia Press / Wolters Kluwer, 2006. Hardback large thick quarto, dustjacket (flaps four sides), very good condition (in very good dustjacket), black & white & sepia (brown-tinted) & colour text-photos, spine jacket lightly faded, minor edgewear. Very heavy (2.0 Kg), and not available for postage to destinations outside Australia. 422 pp. This detailed history by Nonja Peters celebrates the first 400 years of relations between Australia and the Netherlands. The relationship started in 1606, when the Dutch vessel Duyfken mapped part of the coast near present day Weipa, Cape York Peninsula, and later the west coast. Traces of early Dutch influence are still found in such Australian place names as Tasmania and Cape Leeuwin. Large numbers of Dutch migrants arrived in Australia as part of the post-war migration from a war-ravaged Europe, and from the former Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). Today [2006] Dutch-Australians number 270,000 residents.
