Early life of the American inventor, engineer, and painter, perhaps best known for his steamship the Clermont. The author was a great - granddaughter to the subject. Illustrations include the farm house at Little Britain, Pennsylvania, where Fulton was born, portraits of Robert Smith, Sr., and Mary Smith Fulton, the parents of Fulton, after the paintings by Benjamin West, the medal issued by the Fulton Institute, the West painting of Fulton, miniature portraits by Fulton of Samuel Beach, Mr. and Mrs. John Wilkes Kittera, Clementina Ross, Margaret Ross, Fulton's plan for a high level canal, Fulton's self portrait from 1795, his portrait of Joel Barlow, the bust of Fulton by Houdon, a lithograph of Fulton and Napoleon in 1804, and a facsimile letter by Fulton.
