About This Item
New York: Morrow, 1968. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/near fine. First edition. Fine, slight bump to one corner, in bright, crisp dust jacket, some toning to the upper edges of the flaps. Hardcover. 294 pp. Fiction. "Man of the earth"--so the hero of this highly original novel describes himself. Seeking wisdom and fulfillment, he sets out on a modern pilgrimageto the spiritual heart of India. Chance takes him to Ceylon and an ashram whose swami is no Eastern sage but rather an eccentric Irishman. Later he continues his pilgrimage, welcome wherever he goes but confused by the multiplicity of India. At a crucial stage he meets an Indian girl trained in Western ways and in the course of their bittersweet relationship, he finds his vocation.
