About This Item
Detroit, MI: Detroit Photographic Co.. Very Good. 1900. Print. Large photochrom print matted in contemporary wooden frame. Print measures approximately 20.5 x 16.5 inches while the frame measures about 28.5 x 24.5 inches. Frame and matte are in flawless condition. Item has not been examined out of frame. Appears to be in very good condition with small abrasion in upper left of image and slight wrinkling. Image is sharp with vibrant colors. Image of the Colorado River (then known as the Grand) taken by renowned pioneer photographer William Henry Jackson (1843-1942). It shows the tracks of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad following the river below the Echo Cliffs in western Colorado's Glenwood Canyon. The image (No. 59020) was produced by the Detroit Photographic Company, which later became the Detroit Publishing Company. The firm obtained exclusive rights to use the Swiss-invented photochrom process to create colorful postcards, prints, and albums at a time when true color photography was commercially impractical. Jackson joined the Detroit Photographic Company in 1897, bringing his stock of around 10,000 negatives with him (Library of Congress). This is a truly stunning shot from one of the great landscape photographers of the American West. .
