About This Item

Pall Mall London: Charles Knight, 1832. Book. Good. Hardback. Second Edition Enlarged. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. A good copy of this important enlarged second edition with three additional chapters, these are significant additions to the work. In original cloth, professionally re-spined with original cloth laid on, replacement endpapers. The engraved title page is foxed the rest of the volume clean and tight. xxivpp + 387pp +1p advertisement to rear. Has the booksellers "Reply to Mr Babbage between ppxii and xiii. Bibliographically interesting. Indeed this volume discusses at length excess profit within bookselling. This single sheet is tipped in and the booksellers dispute Babbage's claim that they would not stock his book, an indignant retort! This is regarded as the earliest paper on the scientific management of factories and of course was influential in the industrial activities of the period. Babbage is now considered to be the "father of computers", and this was his seminal work. The Introduction to the book states, "The present volume may be considered one of the consequences that have resulted from the Calculating-Engine the construction of which I have been so long superintending". This volume proved a turning point in economic writing and firmly established Babbage as a leading authority of the industrial movement. A presentation inscription to inner blank from the Governors of Grammar School Blackburn to Thomas Lewis..
