San Francisco: The Roxburghe Club [printed by the Grabhorn Press], 1930. Limited Edition. Stiff wraps. Fine. Gockinga, Rene. No. 152 of 250 copies, quarto size, [47] pp. The first book published by the Roxburghe Club of San Francisco, "Eden Anto" is the story of a rare 1532 edition of Ariosto's "Orlando Furioso", written by Italian novelist Antonio Fogazzaro (1842-1911). Three illustrations by Dutch artist Rene Gockinga (1893-1962) are reproduced, through an experiment of half-tone printing by the Grabhorn Press; the resulting images have a rich, almost velvet quality.

___DESCRIPTION: Full green paper over thin boards, cream paper spine label with green lettering, green ribbon ties, fore- and bottom edges uncut, title page with black decorative border illuminated in red, facsimiles of book pages and manuscripts preceding the text, three illustrations by Rene Gockinga printed in brown with yellow and black borders throughout; Lutetia type, Arnold paper, quarto size (11.25" by 8"), pagination: [i-xvi] 1-30 [1 colophon], one of 250 copies, this number 152. Tasteful prior owner bookplate, belonging to James David Zellerbach (1892-1963), the United States Ambassador to Italy in 1957, tipped in on the front paste-down endpaper. In a slipcase covered in green paper.

___CONDITION: A fine copy; the covers clean, the corners straight and unrubbed, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and the only prior owner marking is the bookplate mentioned above; some very faint off-setting from the bookplate, else fine. The slipcase is fine also, strong and sturdy, clean overall, without wear.
