About This Item

Manchester: Carcanet. Very Good/Very Good. 1977. First Edition. Hard Cloth Cover. 8vo 0856352144 Dust jacket complete, unclipped. No ownership marks. 61 pages clean and tight. At the Edge is Neil Powell's first book-length collectiop of poems. Born in London in 1948, he read English and American Literature at the University of Warwick. Currently he lives and teaches in North Hertfordshire. His poems received a Gregory Award in 1969 and two pamphlet collections have appeared, Suffolk Poems (Mandeville Press, 1975) and Four Letters (Letter Press, 1976). His work was included in Ten English Poets (Carcanet, 1976). He is currently completing a critical book about modern poetry, Carpenters of Light, to be published by Carcanet in due course. Neil Powell's poetry is formally versatile and assured. He has mastered syllabic disciplines as well as metrical and free verse forms. Reason and a clear syntactical line distinguish all the poems, which achieve resonance and memorability by virtue of their clarity, accuracy of image and thought, and carefully developed rhythms. .
