About This Item

London: R. H. Porter, 1895. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. 4to (30 x 23 cm). 1895-1896 , 4to , i-xvi, 54 fine coloured lithograph plates drawn by the author each illustrating a number of eggs of each species. The accompanying letterpress has been neatly numbered in pencil (possibly by the publisher as we have seen other copies paginated thus). Publisher's half maroon morocco with marbled boards and end papers, top edge gilt, the wrappers to the original four parts have been bound at rear . Binding a little rubbed, with slight chipping to the leather at the head and tail of spine, but a very presentable copy . Contents tight, a little foxing and spotting but more or less confined to the text and original wrappers, (a few plates slightly affected) more noticeable to the endpapers and first and last few pages but less than normal. Some of the plates towards the front of the book affected by a waterstain to the bottom edge - 15 of which not affecting the illustration, 1 affecting the illustration and 5 very slightly stained, the remainder more or less clean. The book was issued in four parts between October 1895 and July 1896. Overall a good/very good copy of this important oological work that covers the Limicolae i.e. the plovers and sandpipers..
