About This Item

New York and London: W W Norton & Co Inc, 1994. Paperback. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7?" - 9?" tall. Trade Paperback in Very Good Condition. Clean cover designed by Marek Antoniak, slight edgewear, no creasing, solidy bound. Pages clean and free from any markings. A collection of essays in which Gould speaks of the importance of unbroken connections within our own lives and to our ancestral gererations. Along the way he opens to us the mysteries of frog tails, frog calls, and other matters, and shows once and for all why we must take notice when a seemingly insignificant creature is threatened, like the land snail Partula from Moorea, whose extinction he movingly relates. He is a master for finding striking analogies that highlight the organizing principles behind nature. 479 pages. 5.5 x 8.25 inches. Norton & Co., New York and London, 1994.

Synopsis

Eight Little Piggies (1993) is the sixth volume of collected essays by the Harvard paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould. The essays were culled from his monthly column "The View of Life" in Natural History magazine, to which Gould contributed for 27 years. The book deals, in typically discursive fashion, with themes familiar to Gould's writing: evolution and its teaching, science biography, probabilities and common sense.
