Madrid: En la Imprenta del Consejo de Indias, 1785. [12], 257pp, [1]. With a half-title. Contemporary gilt-tooled cat's paw calf, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece. Lightly rubbed. Marbled endpapers, recent bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst to FEP, early inked ownership inscription of Josh. Pitt, Cirencester to verso of FFEP, scattered spotting. A handsome late eighteenth-century edition of Spanish author Luis Vélez de Guevara's (1579-1644) most celebrated novel. First published in 1641, the work is a fantastical allegorical satire of the laws and customs of Baroque Spain, notably adapted by French dramatist Alain Lesage (1668-1747) as Le Diable boiteux (1707; The Devil upon Two Sticks). The novel is printed here together with two works by playwright Francisco de Navarrete y Ribera, 'Novela de los tres hermanos, escrita sin el uso de la a' and 'Novela del caballero invisible compuesta en equÃvocos burlescos'. . 8vo.
