Erected by Philip II in the 16th century, this sprawling granite edifice set in the Guadarrama Mountains was physical proof of Spain's unwavering orthodoxy. This is its, and Spain's, story. Frontispiece: full page, full color--Saint Lawrence, the third-century martyr to whom Philip II dedicated El Escorial. Book is clean, solid, unmarked other than usual library markings. Library rebound in orange patterned cloth, rounded corners. Interior is in Near Fine Condition--pages glossy, clean, unmarked; page 13/14 have a crease down the page like a fold.
